MLBMLB Schedule Home Scores Standings Stats Group Deals White Sox manager Pedro Grifol is fired following an AL record-tying slump. Staff Writer for ESPN Jesse Rogers 08:37 PM on August 8, 2024 Chicago Pedro Grifol, the manager of the Chicago White Sox, was fired on Thursday after the team's 21-game losing streak this month tied an American League record.
Although they did not reveal Grifol's temporary replacement, the White stated that their next full-time manager is "expected to be announced after the conclusion of the 2024 season." Two days ago, the White Sox ended Major League Baseball's greatest losing skid since 1988—when the Baltimore Orioles also dropped 21 games in a row—and went into Thursday with the lowest record in the majors (28-89).
The White Sox snapped their losing skid on Tuesday night in Oakland, defeating the Athletics 5-1. However, they lost 3-2 on Wednesday after blowing a two-run lead. After Tony La Russa resigned in November 2022 due to health concerns, Grifol, 54, was brought on board. Despite his promises, the White Sox underwent a decline under his leadership, particularly in the previous season when they fielded a more competitive club. Under Grifol, Chicago finished 89-190.
